We had a great time at our Class of 1958 picnic. I arrived early to wrap the tables in paper cloths. Just me and the unwelcomed quests (The Bees). Roger Castle was next to arrive with a much welcomed cooler of soft drinks!!! During the picnic it was voted on to have our Class Reunion in September, 2013 with the added request it be held on a weekend when the "game" was away!!! Also requested was that the classmates in Lexington be included in the planning of the Reunion. Donations were requested by Ron Knipp to cover the cost of the website maintained by Judy and Charlie. We left about 2:30 or 3 pm. Taking our bee stings home until next we meet. Thanks to our great class photographers, Lee Hart and Rhrea Howard.

Kay & I will help out anyway the planning committee thinks we can be of assistance.  We are a little further down the highway in Louisville but we have wheels & a telephone that we can use if needed in any way.

Hey classmates, another change in the planning group to meet at the Elks.In talking with Judy, Tuesday is a better date so others can come Tenative date is Feb 19th, at noon, at the Elks  Hope to see you there; Jim

Hi classmates, the reason for the change in reunion meeting dates is that the service clubs of ashland (Rotary, Kiwanis, etc) are now meeting at the Elks on Mondays and Tuesdays and that room is not available for us so Wednesdays is the only option.  thanks, Jim

The first planning meeting for the 55th year reunion was held and no one showed up!!!!   Well, actually myself and one other was there.  So due to the lack of local interest, the 55th year reunion may have to be canceled.  I regret this for the out of town classmates who voted at the annual picnic to have a reunion.  I invite your comments and/or solutions to this present state of affairs!!!!  Thank you, Jim Powers

Jim, of course I am one of those out of town classmates and hate to hear that no one attended the first planning  meeting. Maybe try again or maybe send some emails out or post on facebook to get the word out. We are all getting older and would hate to see our reunions post-poned because we have always had such good turnouts in the past. Well just wanted to tune in and make a comment.
take care, juanita

Jimmy,
Linda and I just read the comments on  the Blog page and were disappointed that only
You and one other attended the reunion mtg. I hope all those locals who read this will realize how much time and effort that you always put into these reunions, but you still need everyone's help and support. I know that if everyone gets behind the committee
we can have a fantastic class reunion. Let us know if there is anything that we can do from afar.

Jim, had lunch with the Lexington group and we were discussing our Reunion.  We were just wondering where it would be - Country Club or Elks.  I am so sorry that only one other showed up to discuss/plan.  Maybe if we knew enough ahead of time some of us Lexingtonians could drive up and meet with you.  Let me know.

Another out of towner who is willing to help from afar.  If we really want classmates to attend, it is a long drive for a two-hour picnic.  Have we ever considered the Ashland Plaza with classmates staying there?  Many no longer have relatives in Ashland and have to stay in a hotel anyway, even for the picnic.  Let's not let the opportunity to get together slip away.  Are there any creative ideas out there?  The internet gives us a way to communicate and help plan, even though we are miles away.

There is certainly interest out there in the "hinterlands"  I will mail the first announcement this weekend.  With our mail sorting no longer local, it take a few days to reach you.  The date will be Sept 20/21, 2013 at the Elks.  Date has been booked.  Next Planning meeting is Sept 20th at noon at the Elks.   Thanks all for your comments.
Donna, the Plaza will proabably give us a group rate as they did some years ago.  The hotel no longer has a large dinner service.  Keep those comments coming, classmates, we will get this done!!!  Jim

i was just wondering how date and place has been set when a commit meeting has not happened.i think all class members should voice an opinion on the subject before a date and
place has been set.if the dates are during poage landing days or ashland home football game
the rates at local motels/hotels will be an added expense for our classmates.having said that
i think elks is best place because of large room and closer drive to classmates staying in ashland.as you know i have been in cocoa beach fl since christmas and will be home for the
1st meeting. thanks charles

It will be great to see you at the meeting.  We can have our first treasurer's report.  Some of the guys at the picnic requested that we have it on a weekend when there was an "away game"  I thought they ment UK but they may have been referring to the Tomcats.  In any event, I asked Dirk Payne about the Tomcats and he said the schedule had not been released yet.   People from out of town here for Poage landing days usually stay over night and the rooms would be scarce that weekend.  I took the advice of classmates at the lunch who said you better book the Elks before we lose it.  See you March 20th at noon.  Jim

Just checked with Tourism, Poage Landing is Sept 20, 21st.  My first of many mistakes.
I will definitely put a hold on preparing the cards.  It is in the computer and  can be changed.  We can take the chance and wait for the March 20th meeting or request the weekend of Sept 13, 14th or even the 27, 28th.???  When I booked it on Wednesday, all of the weekends lin Sept were  available.  Decisions, Decisions.  Jim

if the members care they will attend,if no so be it.
i really hate to think at this late date at our age we cannot afford a motel/hotel

I do not plan on attending the reunion this year but your logic for determining the date of the 55th reunion leaves me puzzled.  If dates are available, why not select a date that makes it less expensive for our classmates?  It should be noted that the expenses incurred are not just for a two day weekend for those living out of state.  They have travel expenses including food, fuel, and additional hotel expenses on the road, both coming and going.   Add other related costs such as putting your pet in the vet while you are traveling and that little “two day” event has turned into a significant expenditure.  Anyway that those expenses can be reduced without having an adverse effect on the event should be considered.  Hotel costs are much higher and perhaps just as importantly, hotel availability during Poage Landing is extremely limited in Ashland.  If the dates are firm for this year, at least keep the “out-of-towners” in your plans for future picnics/reunions.

Bill, Thanks for your opinion.  This Website has been most beneficial in receiving comments from  classmates.   Enjoy that weekend with your family, where ever that might be.  The picnic has been always the Friday of Poage Landing Days, of course, being a one day event, hotels would not have been a problem.  Thaks again and hope to see you & yours in 2014.   Jim

The second reunion planning meeting was held today at the Elks and it was a great one by any standards!!!!  Those attending in alpha order:  Essie fliehman, Rhrea Howard, Charles Maynard, Nan O'Hara and Jim Powers.

Discussion was held on reception and dinner meals ( Munchies for Friday, Chicken, baked steak for Sat) Reception table (Howard, McCoy, Lakin) were suggested.  Photographer for class picture (was Bradley, Ceredo, last time) Photo montage for reception (Rhrea did it two reunions ago) DJs were suggested (Maynard will check on availability).  BYOB and Elks bartender on duty (possibly) Charles presented our expenses last  time (which I left on my desk, thanks Charles)  He agreed to do an estimate on our expenses coming up.  Nan is looking into table decorations for tables on Sat.  That is all I can decipher from my notes, sure I left something out.   This is too much detail for those that intend to come but we wanted you to know that your reunion planners are at work!!!

Searching for another classmate:  Patricia Waddell Kaylor, Columbus, OH.

The Reunion planners met today over hotdogs at the Elks.  Those attended:  Roberta Adkins, Essie Fliehman, Rhrea Howard, Charles Maynard, Nan Ohara and Jim Powers.  Mr. Bradley, photograher, is considered for the Class picture (he took the last one).  Deposit paid for the two nights to the Elks.  No BYOB, new regs of the Elks.  Nan suggested table decorations, you will be surprised.   Food:  baked steak, chicken.  Entertainment was discussed, music from the 50s, 60s.  After considering all expenses of the last reunion (presented by Charles), we tentatively decided on $60.00 per person ($120.00, couples).  This could change, it is early.  Registrations will be mailed sometime in July.  Each meeting presents items to be considered.   Until the next time, Jim

Jim,

I appreciate receiving the information about the upcoming reunion for the AHS class of 1958. Unfortunately, I will not be able to come.

Thanks for the blog. I didn't realize it existed. It's nice to hear about old friends. Here's a summary of the way I spent the past 55 years:

After high school, I graduated from Berea College with a degree in elementary education. I married my college sweetheart after graduation, and we moved to Knoxville, TN, where I taught middle school science until retiring in 2001. After a divorce, I moved to Oak Ridge, TN, and now work as an educator at the American Museum of Science and Energy.

I have two daughters and two grandchildren, all of whom graduated from Oak Ridge High School (except for the youngest grandchild who is a senior at ORHS this year).

I have enjoyed various hobbies during this time: hiking, traveling, mission trips, church work, and painting landscapes. I have been very well blessed.

Thank you for keeping up with everyone. I hope the reunion goes well.

I plan to attend the Friday night social.  May I pay at the door or should I mail in my check?  See you then.  Gary.

The Planning Committee met at the Elks, Wednesday (Hopefully for the last time).  Discussion was held on the cake, door prizes, banner for
the class, munchies for Friday, deceased members listing to be displayed and final count for Saturday food (if you can still make it, we can add!!)  Classmates present:  Essie Fliehman, Rhrea Howard, Kay Lakin, Charles Maynard, Butch Newman, Nan Ohara and Jim Powers.

My repy to Ernie was connected to his post so I will repeat it.  All attendees coming only for Friday Night or Saturday Night will be charged $30.00 per night.

The Class picture will be taken at 5:45 pm on Saturday evening.  This is to ensure  that the pictures will be returned to us before the evening is over.   thanks, Jim

Thank you Reunion Committee for all that you did in staging another successful reunion weekend. For those of us who live some distance from Ashland, we simply show up and enjoy what others have planned. We appreciate your efforts so much. Of course, since you did such a good job, we have hired you for the next edition of our reunion. Take care all.

We had a great reunion classmates.  Those of you who could not attend for whatever reason, missed a great time and we understand your absence.  The remainder of our funds will go for prizes at the next picnic and payment on our great website.  Judy and Charles will let us know when and where the next gathering will be.  Until then, Jim
