Ashland Old Timer's Breakfast
On February 15, the Ashland High School Alumni Gym, where Tomcat games were played from 1925 through 1962, was recognized as a Glory Road site by the Kentucky Basketball Hall of Fame. Four other gym sites have been selected in Kentucky to have a Glory Road event. KET will have a TV special sometime in the future honoring these events.
The current Tomcats played a game in Alumni Gym on this night and, at halftime, ex-Tomcats who played there from the 1950's to 1962, were honored. Eleven former players came and were recognized. Jim Harbison and I were the only 1958 graduates who were included in the eleven. Three others - Herb Conley, Dick Fillmore, and Warner Caines (1959 graduates) - played on our 1958 team. Three members of the 1961 state championship team - Larry Conley, Jerry Daniels, and Dale Sexton - attended, also. Other attendees were Jerry Henderson and Darryle Kouns (54 team), and Buffalo Hopkins (55 team).
This event was a great, humble experience for Jim and me. We were teammates at Means, Coles, and with the Tomcats. We were grateful for the opportunity to represent our 1958 team at this Glory Road event.
At the recommendation of Judy, I am focusing our memory photos this month on this great basketball event and photos of our teams when we were in high school.
